As part of their Curriculum, the Year 9 Swimming Classes have an opportunity to earn the Life Saving Bronze Medallion.
This semester during our Swimming lessons, Year 9’s had an opportunity to gain their Life Saving Bronze Medallion.
The Bronze Medallion course provides participants with the skills and knowledge in order to improve their survival skills, while also developing a level of judgement, physical ability, and technique in order to safely participate in rescuing activities.
During these lessons I particularly enjoyed doing scenarios as it gave us an insight of what might happen in an emergency. For example, in a group of four, one person may be doing the rescuing while the others are acting out a scene, being anything from innocent bystanders to someone lying face mdown in the pool drowning.
It gives us a chance to use our knowledge to analyse an emergency scene, forcing us to make quick decisions. Who should be saved first? Which of the objects provided will help me?
We were then able to apply the skills that we have learnt during the weeks in order to efficiently save those who were drowning while also keeping ourselves safe in the process.
